FAQs – Round Zafu Meditation Cushion
What is a round zafu?
A round zafu is the traditional meditation cushion used in Zen practice. It raises your hips above your knees, allowing your pelvis to tilt forward naturally and helping you sit with an upright, stable posture.
Why choose a round zafu instead of other meditation cushions?
The round zafu is a time-tested design that supports a balanced, forward-tilting posture. Many practitioners appreciate its simplicity and reliability—it does exactly what a meditation cushion is meant to do, without extra complexity.
Who is the round zafu best for?
The round zafu works well for most practitioners, from beginners to experienced meditators. It’s especially suited for those who prefer a classic, centered seat and want to develop a stable, grounded posture.
Will a round zafu help my posture?
Yes. By elevating your hips, the zafu allows your spine to stack naturally, reducing strain and making it easier to sit upright for longer periods. Many users notice an immediate improvement in posture .
What sitting positions can I use with a round zafu?
The round zafu works well with cross-legged positions, including Burmese, half lotus, and full lotus. It can also be used for kneeling (seiza).
How does a round zafu compare to a crescent zafu?
Round zafu: More traditional, encourages a forward-tilting, centered posture
Crescent zafu: Provides more support for the legs and hips
If you prefer simplicity and a classic feel, the round zafu is often the first choice.
What is the difference between buckwheat and kapok filling?
Buckwheat hulls: Firm, supportive, and mold to your body. Heavier and more grounded.
Kapok: Lightweight, soft yet firm, with a slightly springy feel.
Can I adjust the firmness of the zafu?
Yes. Both kapok and buckwheat versions allow you to add or remove filling, so you can fine-tune the height and firmness to your preference .
What is the difference between Standard and Deluxe zafus?
Standard: Non-removable cover
Deluxe: Removable, washable outer cover with an inner muslin liner for easier fill adjustment
Is the cover washable?
The Deluxe cover is machine washable (except patterned fabrics, which are best hand-washed or dry cleaned). The Standard version does not have a removable cover.
How big is the round zafu?
Kapok: Approx. 14″ diameter, 8.5″ height, 2.5 lbs
Buckwheat: Approx. 16″ diameter, 5.5″ height, 5.5 lbs
This difference reflects the nature of the filling—kapok is lighter and loftier, while buckwheat is denser.
Do I need a zabuton with a zafu?
While not required, many practitioners pair a zafu with a zabuton mat, which cushions the knees and ankles while the zafu supports the hips.
Is this a good zafu for beginners?
Yes. The round zafu is often the best starting point—simple, effective, and widely used in meditation halls around the world.
How long will this zafu last?
With its durable cotton duck fabric and double-stitched construction, a well-made zafu can last for many years of regular use. Many customers describe these as long-term, reliable cushions.
Can I use this cushion for purposes other than meditation?
Yes. Some people use zafus for casual floor sitting, stretching, or as a chair boost. But it’s designed first and foremost for meditation practice.
Is the zafu easy to move and store?
Yes. Each zafu includes a built-in carrying handle, making it easy to move between rooms or take to a meditation group.
